Holiday season - ‘Tis the time to cheer and have fun. As you gather gifts for your loved ones, it is important to remember that this is the time to help the less fortunate ones as well. The holidays provide the numerous opportunities to make sure we help the needy by supporting local and global charities. There are many to choose from and you are sure to find a cause that is close to your heart or one that has touched the life of a loved one. Here are some great ways to help the ones in need and bring smiles this holiday season.

Senior citizens and nursing homes. When families get together, senior and elderly residents in the nursing homes can feel lonely and depressed. Sometimes they have very few or no visitors. It would be a good idea to write out some holiday cards and enclose a small gift for them. It will sure brighten their days and bring up the spirits. Nursing homes always love the helping hands during the festive seasons.

Homeless shelters. Homeless shelters provide many opportunities to volunteer at various levels. Volunteer yourself to make and serve Christmas dinner at your local shelter. Bring in the choir to sing carols and make the holiday dinner much more enjoyable. If possible, offer to buy toiletries items or hand out candy.

Toys for Tots. This program is coordinated by the US Marine Corps Reserves that collects new or unwrapped toys to give our in communities around the country. Many children benefit from this program and this is a great way to help someone in need. Dollar stores are great places to go and buy inexpensive toys for the ones in need and donate to Tots for Tots.

Operation Christmas Child. This is charity program where a shoebox is filled with toys, school supplies and hygiene items to be delivered to a boy or girl in countries around the world.

Awareness among own children. Involve whole family including kids in this charitable projects. Help your children remember the true meaning of the holiday season by participating in charitable activities. Let kids contribute to the gifts while putting everything together. Explain to them why it is important to help others. Hand deliver the gifts.

Drop off boxes. Many department stores and chain stores have donation boxes set up mostly in front of their stores. It is easy to drop off an items you wish in those drop boxes.

These are some very simple and easy ways to make this holiday season a happy one for someone in need.
